Motivated by my colourblindness and the stories I covered as a journalist, I started visiting a school for the visually impaired in Calcutta. Here I met Rima, Ashraful, and Brihaspati, students who came to the city to pursue education from faraway villages of West Bengal. As our friendships deepened, I started realising how different our lived experiences had been. I could never understand the effects of the stigma and prejudice they faced on a day-to-day basis, especially in their villages. Their dreams, aspirations, and struggles were very different from mine. The dichotomy between the lives I photographed and my own became too pronounced.In the following years, I collaborated with these young learners. Together, we developed a photographic work titled “The Mysterious Forest,” a series of images exploring a fictional story written by Ashraful, inspired by one of his recurring dreams. In this story, a boy loses his way inside a forest and meets a forest spirit and go on adventures together. Later, these images were converted into tactile prints, making Rima and Ashraful’s work accessible to people living with visual disabilities, including, of course, their creators. In December 2019, with the Research and Exploration Grant from the National Geographic Society, we held a four day pop-up exhibition at their village in Erenda, West Bengal. Across four days, more than 500 visitors viewed our work and listened to the students speak about their experiences. “smart townships.” To my right, I see wide open rice fields stretching out to the horizon, dotted with small clusters of thatched huts. To my left: a cacophony of construction work reverberates and towering skyscrapers gradually disappear into the clouds. In 1995, by government order, all of Rajarhat’s water bodies and land, some of the most fertile in the state, were acquired under India’s draconian Land Acquisition Act of 1894. By May 1999, landowners were sent eviction notices and farmers unwilling to accept them were subjected to state intimidation and brutality. Today, the region is one of West Bengal’s most significant real estate destinations, representing India’s larger story of development. The New World, shaped by listening to the people of Rajarhat’s experiences of fear, loss, hope, and grief, critically examines this narrative. In this series, I reflect on their stories through metaphors depicting the geography’s history of violence, displacement, and gentrification. Workshops in Siem Reap. During the five days of the workshop, I wanted to take pictures of a place where I didn’t know the rules or the language. Friends who had been there recommended following the river. I rented a bicycle for 2 dollars and ended up in a small village along the vast stretches of a dry riverbed, far from the town.&nbsp;In the following days, I kept returning to this area between Chreav and Tonle Sap, an agrarian region known for its rice production and fisheries, also a meeting point for religions and communities.
